The body speaks free

How free can art really be? When Emma came for a few days of photography, I had no idea that a background would become a work of art – with her whole body as a brush.

One evening, we started talking about backgrounds—how they shape a photo’s mood and how experimenting can bring new expressions to life.

I usually use a black blackout curtain from IKEA, but I also had a white background leaning against a wall. I had been meaning to paint it with abstract gray patches to make it feel more alive and dynamic.

”That sounds amazing!” Emma said excitedly. ”A hand-painted background adds so much more depth and emotion than a plain, manufactured one.” She was eager to start.

Emma had brought paint but no brushes. ”Feel free to use your hands,” I suggested, thinking it would create a softer, more organic effect. Then I left her to it while I worked on my own photos.

She took the task to heart. At first, she used her hands, but soon, her whole body became part of the artwork. With her backside, she made a bold green imprint. Her feet, mouth, and face followed— even her breasts became tools in the process. It wasn’t just a background anymore; it was a painting full of movement, energy, and spontaneity.

Emma smiled as she looked at her work. ”This,” she said, ”is art in its purest form—letting go and letting the body speak.”

What happens when we let go of control and create with our whole being? Maybe we should all dare to explore that a little more.
