I first met Nilla and Stefan almost twenty years ago, when I was looking for models for a photo story about presence and the body. It didn\u2019t happen then, but we stayed in touch. Over the years, I\u2019ve photographed them several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were already a couple, but above all, two people who lived fully \u2013 open to life, their bodies, and connection.
This is their story \u2013 and how everything changed one day on the balcony, without losing what truly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Everything Changed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One ordinary day, Nilla sat on the balcony.
It was quiet and warm. Suddenly, she lost feeling in her legs. Life went from normal to uncertain in minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t feel fear at first,\u201d she says. \u201cThe first thought was: oh, now our sex life is over.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She laughs softly, but there is tenderness in her smile.
Paralysis became a new reality \u2013 but not the end of intimacy, rather the start of something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWe had to start over,\u201d says Stefan. \u201cLearn the body again.
At first we had to manage her legs, but then\u2026 everything worked. Just differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Nilla nods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe body remembers. Desire can\u2019t be paralyzed. It finds new ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Life After<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After the accident, Nilla became even clearer about her sensuality. She talks about pleasure as something bigger than sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI want to feel it build up,\u201d she says.
\u201cNot just the body \u2013 all of me. When head, heart, and body connect, it can be almost too strong. Sometimes I feel like I might faint.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She has started exploring tantric experiences \u2013 where time slows down and touch becomes language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI long for that,\u201d she says. \u201cThe quiet, when all of me is present.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For them, life is now about what is still possible, not what isn\u2019t.
They adapted their motorhome, continue traveling, and find new ways to live closeness every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWe live slower,\u201d says Stefan. \u201cBut maybe deeper.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cAnd we still love,\u201d says Nilla. \u201cWith everything we still have \u2013 and that is a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Bj\u00f6rndammen \u2013 A Place of Freedom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bj\u00f6rndammen<\/a> is a hidden gem in the forest, outside Eskilstuna.
A long, rough path leads through the pine trees. The ground is uneven, roots twist across the trail \u2013 and suddenly the water opens up, calm and sparkling between the rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cHere we can just be,\u201d says Nilla. \u201cNo one cares. You can talk, swim, laugh. And if more happens \u2013 it just happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After her paralysis, Bj\u00f6rndammen became a place where Nilla could feel freedom in her body again. During a swim, a gay couple noticed her moving through the water. When she came up, half-wet and confident, they greeted her with smiles \u2013 completely natural in their own skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They handed her a small medal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou deserve this,\u201d they said. \u201cYou earned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Nilla laughs softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI was so moved. It was beautiful \u2013 and human.
No one made a fuss. It just was. That\u2019s how life should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Life, Love, and Curiosity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Their life is both ordinary and extraordinary. Open about sexuality, curious about others, always with respect and warmth.
Life is not about shocking \u2013 it is about living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWe laugh a lot,\u201d says Stefan. \u201cWe try new things, sometimes it works, sometimes not. But we live. And we enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cAnd we love,\u201d says Nilla.
\u201cWith everything we still have. That\u2019s the most important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Epilogue<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Seeing Nilla and Stefan now, after all these years, I notice the same energy as when I first met them.
Their eyes are curious, warm, and full of life.
It\u2019s not just the body that tells the story \u2013 it\u2019s their whole presence, their willingness to feel, play, and love.
Photographing them is like capturing a living reminder that sensuality and intimacy have no expiration date \u2013 only new ways to bloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
