The Allure and Curse of Backlight

Railway outside Linghem - I was out driving yesterday outside Linköping and felt like checking where Bjärby Saloon is. To get there you have to cross the railway over a bridge.

Bridge outside Linghem - That's when I saw the light. The backlight.

There are quite a few notions that you shouldn't photograph in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest, or that you should avoid backlight. Forget all that. Give it a try. Granted, you'll usually end up swearing because it didn't turn out the way you imagined. Neither do my golf shots.

A little help along the way can make things easier. If you can shade the lens itself, that's usually a good thing. Clean glass surfaces on the lens make for a better result. Good luck.

This is how my test of my fairly new lens turned out once I converted the image to black and white in Photoshop.
